Is Alum Safe Uses and Health Concerns
Alum is an ingredient in some foods and quite a few non-edible products. If youre careful about reading labels, you may wonder what alum is and whether its really safe. The answer is yes, usually, but in small amounts. Alum Safety Depends on Multiple Factors Any form of aluminum sulfate could be called alum, including toxic versions of the chemical. However, the type of alum you find used for pickling and in deodorant is potassium alum, KAl(SO4)2Ã ·12H2O. Sodium aluminum sulfate is a type of alum that is used in commercial baking powder. Potassium alum has been used in maraschino cherries and pickles. The aluminum helps make the cell walls of fruits and vegetables sturdier, producing a crisp pickle or firm cherry. Although alum is approved as a food additive by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, it is toxic in large doses. The current trend is to reduce reliance on chemicals to improve food texture. Alum may be used to soak some pickles, but it is no longer used in the final pickling solution. Alum in deodorant may be absorbed through the skin into the bloodstream. Although it is deemed safe enough for this purpose by the Food and Drug Administration, there may be negative health consequences from continued exposure to the aluminum ions in the alum. Because some of the product is absorbed into the skin, one way to cut your exposure to the product is to apply it every other day, rather than every day. Alum is the key ingredient used in styptic powder and pencils. The small amount absorbed into the bloodstream from occasional use shouldnt cause health problems. Women are advised against using alum to tighten the vaginal wall. While the astringent property of the mineral may temporarily tighten tissue, use of the mineral in this manner may result in scarring, increased susceptibility to infection, and absorption of toxic chemicals. Alum Health Concerns All forms of alum can cause irritation of the skin and mucous membranes. Breathing alum can cause lung damage. Aluminum also may attack lung tissue. Because its a salt, eating massive amounts of alum can make you sick. Usually ingesting alum will make you vomit, but if you could keep it down, the alum could upset the ionic equilibrium in your bloodstream, just like overdosing on any other electrolyte. However, the primary concern with alum is long-term exposure to low levels of the chemical. Aluminum, from your diet or healthcare product, can cause degeneration of nervous system tissue. It is possible that exposure to aluminum could lead to an increased risk of certain cancers, brain plaques, or Alzheimers Disease. Alum from natural sources may contain impurities, including toxic metals such as chromium. Because the chemical composition of natural alum is variable, its best to avoid its use when there is a chance of ingesting the mineral or getting it into the bloodstream. Alum Material Data Safety Sheets If you are concerned about the specific risks associated with alum, its best to consult a Material Data Safety Sheet. You can search for these online and find them by specific type of alum, like potassium alum. Sources Abreo, V. The Dangers of Aluminum Toxicity. Real-time, 3-D X-ray Images May Soon Be a Reality an Example of the Topic Science and Technology Essays by
Real-time, 3-D X-ray Images May Soon Be a Reality In the practice of Medicine, X-ray imaging plays a major role in the diagnosis of a patient. Mostly used in emergency situations, it is also widely utilized during medical operation procedures, treating irregularities of organs such as the heart, liver, brain, and others. It is an ideal option for the doctors in having a seeming first hand vision of the internal organs of the patient needing immediate treatment. Need essay sample on "Real-time, 3-D X-ray Images May Soon Be a Reality" topic? We will write a custom essay sample specifically for you Proceed However, one of the apparent impediments of X-ray machines in the medical profession has been the time frame needed for the film to be developed. Usually, after the patient has been moved to the X-ray room for the said procedures, Radiologic Technologists would need ample time, depending on the thickness of the part oft eh patient being X-rayed, in developing the image in the hospitals dark room. This had been the man reason why in every hospital, X-ray rooms are located on the ground floor, usually near where the emergency rooms are located; to ensure the least amount of time wasted in the patients transfer to and from the emergency rooms. The article released by Science Daily, dated June 17, 2009, regarding the near completion of an X-ray machine with real-time, 3-D imaging capabilities would unquestioningly be a great help for doctors in treating patients of various illnesses, be it in emergency situations, such as vehicular accidents, or in treating internal irregularities of the major organs of the patient. This research, as was stated in Science Daily, done by scientists from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and two Russian science institutes, Voronezh State University and Russian Academy of Sciences, focused on the heavier gaseous atoms instead of the usual low-electron atoms like hydrogen and heliumresulting in the unleashing of much stronger, high-energy X-rays with high intensity (Science Daily, 1). The researchers are not only excited in the medical aspect of the success of their research, but in other fields as well, such as in nanotechnology. They are envisioning a near future where scientists can view in real-time 3-D, through the use of this technology, the microscopic structures under study, such as the DNA (Science Daily, 1). The impeding invention on this field would provide scientists in real-time, with images of the bacteria or viruses being studied in laboratories, in cases where immediate cures are needed to be discovered for the benefit of the populace, such as the N1H1 virus One could only imagine the benefits this would provide if plans to manufacture a portable model of this X-ray device would become a reality. Virtually any medical practitioner, such as the first aid workers of an ambulance team, would have the capability to accurately perform X-rays, and perhaps link the image in real-time to the hospitals, where a certified doctor can diagnose the patient, even before the ambulance arrives, thus making the process faster, more efficient, and perhaps life-saving. Conclusion The invention of a 3-D real-time X-ray imaging brings forth benefits to the medical and scientific world never before experienced since the invention of X-ray itself. Its benefits and applications are virtually limitless, and its conclusion will be, in every aspect, attuned for the benefit and advancement of mankinds development, safety, and health. Critical Thinking Steps - Essay Example 19), an issue can be described as a question or a controversy that is responsible for a conversation or discussion that is taking place. It can further be described as the stimulus for whatever that the communicating parties are saying (Brown and Keeley, p. 19). The authors suggest that there are basically two types of issues namely the prescriptive and descriptive issues. The descriptive issues refer to issues that raise controversies or questions concerning past, present or future descriptions. On the other hand, prescriptive issues have been described as those issues which issues that raise concerns as to what is wrong or right. The case in the PDQ memo is a descriptive issue since the PDQ memo expressly states that ââ¬Å"Specifically, the question is whether the compensation level for PDQââ¬â¢s CEO is appropriate to the position with respect to current industry standardsâ⬠(Mark Headlee, personal communication, October 1,2011 ). This clearly shows that the issue in the m emo questions whether it is right to pay the sum provided for the CEO after considering the current standards in that industry. According to Brown and Keeley (p.21), a conclusion can be described as the message that speaker or author wants you to accept as viable. The PDQ memo concludes by saying that, ââ¬Å" Our finding is that the compensation of the chief executive is not appropriate to the current industry standards for a company the size of PDQ because it is malignedâ⬠(Mark Headlee, personal communication, October 1, 2011).

The quadrennial Olympics Essay Example for Free
The quadrennial Olympics Essay His athleticism was displayed when he was tapped to join the United States judo team who competed in the 1964 edition of the quadrennial Olympics. And because of that, there are biographical notes that described him as ââ¬Å"world famous,â⬠considering that a stint in the Olympics and a chance to represent the U. S. is something that does not come anybodyââ¬â¢s way all the time. Contributing to this is skill, dedication and passion for the sport, which reflected in Campbellââ¬â¢s early achievements during his early judo career prior to his selection to the United States Judo team. For three times, Campbell was considered as the countrys best when it comes to judo. He bested the competition during the 1963 edition of the Pan-American Games. After that, he earned the honor in becoming the captain of the squad that the United States sent to Tokyo to compete in the judo event of the Olympics, even earning a more honorable status in the international judo scene by acting as coach for the judo team of the US after he was done actively fighting . Jeweller The most significant development in the life of Campbell which was also the turning point of his financial capability was Campbellââ¬â¢s move towards jewellery designing. Campbell possessed a deadly combination; in one hand, he has the tradition of Native American art passed on to him by his culture; and on the other hand, his talent and skill in fine arts which he learned in school and developed personally through self practice. Using these advantages that he possessed, Campbell hit the jackpot with his new line of expertise. His works was received by the consumers with a high level of interest, while left and right critics are giving his works positive reviews while his personal art received honors and accolades. Campbell made full use of his artistic instincts, the art form of his Native American heritage and the techniques that he learned from Japan and from the US as well, to become one of the most heralded artists for jewellery during his time. He focused on every type of jewellery. He had designs for bracelets and rings as well as for pendants, and many of these designs are award winning to boot. In fact, the ranch measuring to up to 120 acres located in the Southern Ute Indian Reservation, located close to Ignacio in Colorado, was something that Campbell was finally capable of buying because of the increase in money and wealth that he achieved after the good sales of the jewelleries that he made and designed and sold. He did not just try to reproduce what was already considered as existing art and sell it to consumers of the contemporary time. He tried to do something different, what others even defined as bold artwork. Campbell built up a successful business making jewellery of his own bold design . His Life in Congress His first experience serving the public happened not when he was elected in the United States House of Representatives when the then-Congressman Campbell was elected to represent the third congressional district of Colorado, where Campbell served in this capacity starting in 1987 and ending in 1993. Before that, he was first an elected official for the fifty ninth house district office of Colorado, a public servant office. He did not pursue the position intentionally but was just a product of coincidence starting from a bad weather that led to him being unable to fly his small plane to deliver jewelleries and instead leading him to a meeting of the Democrats in Colorado where he eventually run for public office for the first time. To the surprise of the many, he won after beating an opponent whom many believe was more popular than Campbell when it comes to politics . Before his election to the third congressional district of Colorado, Michael Strang was the congressman of Colorados third congressional district; and following Campbells tenure was the election of Scott McInnis. While serving in Congress, Campbell slowly gained a reputation that can be good or bad, complimentary or insulting depending on who is looking and who is interpreting. In the aspect of financial management, he was considered as a conservative; but the same cannot be said when it comes to social issues, which showed Campbells more liberal side. For example, he supported the idea that women who are pregnant should have the choice and the option on whether to continue with the pregnancy or to just simply abort it, making Campbell a supporter of prochoice for this matter . Campbell, all in all, held office in the Colorado General Assembly for a length of two terms before moving forward and serving in the United States House of Representatives, where he worked as an elected official from 1987 up to 1992 . Another significant action made by Campbell when he was still a congressman is a move that helped many Native American Indians and will still help many more. This is his co-authoring of what is now known as the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act, which proposes the setting of several important guidelines, as well as standards that affect directly how the lands and reservations designated for Native American Indians are being used and will be used in the future . Campbell also participated in talks, discussions and problem solving endeavors inside his political sphere to address the problems of the people from his own culture and heritage. He (Campbell) has become a symbol of recognition and reasonable discussion for tribal interests. For example, water rights dispute occurring among Native Americans was settled because of his role and participation in the discussion that enabled for all parties concern to adopt a system favorable to all stakeholders. There were also symbolic efforts, like the renaming of the Cuter Battlefield Monument to Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument in the belief that the Native American Indians who fought in that battle should be the ones honored in these hallowed grounds. It was also in this point of his career wherein he worked on the establishment of what is now known today as the National Museum of the American Indian . His Role in Establishing the National Museum of the American Indian Senator Campbells work, influence and contribution to the creation of the National Museum of the American Indian (NMIA) did not go unnoticed; this applies positively and negatively. Those who believed that he was instrumental in realizing this very important step towards culture preservation and presentation to the people expressed their feeling of gratitude to Senator Campbells efforts. For example, the address of Lawrence M. Small, the Smithsonian Institution Secretary, during the Opening Ceremony of the National Museum of the American Indian made mention of senator Campbell whom he described in the address as skillful advocates and someone who Small considered as a person who was the with group who created the museum from the ground up every step of the way . Small expressed his personal gratitude, as well as the gratitude of those who appreciated the museum, by saying how the people cannot thank Senator Campbell enough for his work towards the creation of the museum, a work Smart described as extraordinary . At the opening of the NMAI, Senator Campbell once again flashed his pride for his culture and heritage by coming to the opening ceremonies in full regalia fitting a prominent leader of one of the American Indian tribes and fitting to one of the individuals who muscled the government and made efforts so that this particular museum is realized. During the opening day, Campbell came wearing traditional American Indian outfit. He was donning a feathered headdress, while the rest of his body was covered by the traditional white leather worn by Campbellââ¬â¢s ancestors, along with the beads and other decorations adorning the costume that represents the culture and heritage of Campbell and many other American Indians in the US and around the world who will finally be able to communicate their culture and heritage to the greater, bigger audience through the opening of the museum. This is just one, and a special one of the many incidences wherein Campbell uses his clothing to tell the world about his heritage and culture, considering the significance of the occassion and Campbell dressed according to what he believed is proper and what was dictated by his sense of propriety. His regular working days as an elected public official was no better (although less loud and flamboyant than his traditional Indian attire during the NMAI opening) especially since he was considered as a bull headed individual when it comes to dress codes He opts to wear what he believes he has the right to wear for his own reasons, and that includes sentimentality over culture and heritage and how he wanted to shout to the world this message every time Campbell Insists on dressing western style, neckerchief instead of tie, even in Washington .

Evaluation of Sociological Theories Essay -- Papers Sociology Deviance
Evaluation of Sociological Theories Deviance can be described as: "Nonconformity with existing/traditional social norms. This nonconformity is often said to be pathological when it challenges power and privilege; yet it is said to be indicative of innovation or creativity when the gatekeepers of morality approve it. A loaded term, deviancy is a negative asset when the environment is stable but can be a positive asset to a society when the environment is irreversibly changing." Each perspective asks different questions and focuses on different issues regarding crime and deviance. They have different ideas about the causes of crime. Subcultural theories on crime and deviance were developed in the late 1950s and early 1960s from the works of Albert Cohen(1955) and Richard Cloward and Lloyd Ohlin(1960). They suggested that people react to forces 'external' to them, this leads them to behave in certain ways. Their behaviour is determined by social causes. Criminals behave differently from non-criminals. Subcultural theorists have attempted to seek the causes of these differences, they claim to have identified malfunctions in the social order. These malfunctions are seen to be rectifiable by different types of social engineering e.g. Social reform, social welfare and education. Crimes are 'social facts' and therefore must have 'social causes'. Criminals are not seen as 'abnormal' individuals by subcultural theorists, but as social actors influenced by social causes. Statistics have indicated that criminals are mostly male, adolescent, working class and urban living. An idea inspired by Durkhiem (1952) suggested that this is a 'socia... ...s as it gives evidence to support their idea that working class people commit more crimes than middle class males. On the other hand, criminal statistics was challenged by left realists who believe that criminal statistics is the reality and therefore we should accept it, along with the solutions to attempt to solve the problems to tackle the high levels of crime. Marxist approach in explaining deviant behaviour is only reliable to some extent. Along with the contradictions from other perspectives, it shows that improvements can be added to their ideas. Marxists mainly concentrated on the class distribution and stress that they the ruling class control the norms and values of the society. It will not be classed as deviant unless the bourgeoisie say so and they will not say so unless a working class person commits it.

Androgynous Man
The Androgynous Man At a point in Noel Perrinââ¬â¢s life, he suddenly became conflicted over his masculinity. It was such a breakthrough, that he had to analyze the whole situation. Although it took some years to finally grasp the concept of it, Perrin is now comfortable and understands the logic behind the typical gender roles; not from research and other peopleââ¬â¢s work, but from his own experience and his own ideas. At an age where you would generally start to develop from a boy to a man, age sixteen, Noel Perrin found himself on a three-day trip from New York to Steamboat Springs, Colorado to become an assistant horse wrangler. On this trip with him, Perrin brought Gone with the Wind and a handful of magazines that obtained some interesting articles. In a short period of time, Perrin was out of reading material so he then went back and read all the boring articles and all the quizzes that you would find in a magazine at the time. One of the quizzes that really caught Perri nââ¬â¢s eye was ââ¬Å"How Masculine/ Feminine Are You? â⬠The quiz consisted of inkblots that had four options as choices and you would answer the option that you thought the inkblot most resembled. When Perrin finished this quiz and then found out his results, he was astonished by the conclusion. On a scale from one to ten of masculinity, Perrin was an abysmal 1. 2. Perrin was so confounded over the results that he then went back and analyzed every option. From this, he came up with two basic patterns that he found in the inkblot choices. Perrin claims that males would relate to the inkblots as man-made objects while, females would relate to the inkblots as natural objects. He then went on to conclude that the test itself was using limited criteria and that masculinity/femininity is more complicated than this test states. Perrin believes that there are a large percent of males and females who are androgynous or have both gender qualities. Furthermore, Perrin then proceeds to classify the different gender types; specifically for the male. Perrin strongly insists that there are men who are the ââ¬Å"he-manâ⬠or the one hundred percent man. These men are attracted to physical power and dominance. Also, these ââ¬Å"he-menâ⬠are so unselfconsciously at ease that other men try to imitate them. The reasoning for the imitation is that generally men think that they have to be the one hundred percent male. These imitators fail to come to the realization that just like women; men also come in a wide variety of types. Perrin then goes on to say that these imitators spend their whole life trying to play that role that theyââ¬â¢re scared to believe in a weakness in them. Admittedly, Perrin strongly believes that androgynous people are growing by the numbers. He makes a connection with the womenââ¬â¢s movement for the breakthrough of androgynes, but Perrin also believes that one mistake women have done is that they think that all men should be androgy nous; this would lead to a very ââ¬Å"dullâ⬠world Perrin states. Perrin subsequently proceeds to give us his ideal or definition of the androgynous man. He uses his own situations such as feeding his kids, how he knows nothing about cars, buying a book called Home Repairs Any Woman Can Do and how some emotional scenes from movies get him all choked up.Overall, the definition of the androgynous man is having traits of the opposite sex in a casual way. After examining Perrinââ¬â¢s article, The Androgynous Man, I find myself mostly agreeing with his definition of the androgynous man and how their numbers are growing. I tend to agree with most of his ideas except for the fact of how he claims itââ¬â¢s so wrong to be an imitator. When I read about Perrin's version of the ââ¬Å"he-manââ¬â¢ or the ââ¬Å"one-hundred percent maleâ⬠, I automatically thought of James Bond. I think the term now would a ââ¬Å"manââ¬â¢s-manâ⬠.Whatââ¬â¢s not manlier than ordering a dry martini, driving a sports car, being a monogamist, or probably the manliest thing of them all, having a gun? What male doesnââ¬â¢t want to have at least one of those things? So when Perrin states that:Partly theyââ¬â¢re [imitators] just envious of the he-manââ¬â¢s unconscious ease. Mostly theyââ¬â¢re terrified of finding that there may be something wrong with them deep down, some weakness at the heart. To avoid discovering that, they spend their lives acting out the role that the he-man naturally lives. Sad. (Perrin, Page 247-248) I completely disagree with hat. Perrin makes it sound like itââ¬â¢s such a burden to be envious or jealous of those manly qualities. I think itââ¬â¢s human nature to do that and there is nothing wrong with acting out that way. No man is going to say ââ¬Å"I want to be that guyâ⬠, instead theyââ¬â¢re saying ââ¬Å"I want to be LIKE that guyâ⬠, combining the qualities you have already with the ones that you donââ¬â¢t have. I believe if youââ¬â¢re not constantly searching to be better in life or have better qualities, whether theyââ¬â¢re manlier or not, whatââ¬â¢s the point of existing in life? Itââ¬â¢s human nature to try to be better in one way or another. For example, if thereââ¬â¢s an update for your iphone, are you not going to take it? No, because that update is going to make it better. Same rules apply to human life. Another issue I have with another one of Perrinââ¬â¢s opinions is he also believes that ââ¬Å"â⬠¦they [imitators] arenââ¬â¢t as free as us androgynesâ⬠(Perrin, Page 247). Perrin doesnââ¬â¢t really back up his opinion here, as he also states that his ââ¬Å"Answer is mere speculation, but not casualâ⬠(Perrin, Page 247). Well, if you canââ¬â¢t back this up, donââ¬â¢t state it. Iââ¬â¢m not going to sit here and tell you that Ford is better than Chevrolet and when you ask, why?Iââ¬â¢m not going to answer, ââ¬Å"Just because it isâ⬠. No one would respect or acknowledge my opinion then and I believe the same applies to this matter. When Perrin can come up with proven facts to back up this statement, I will act accordingly. In conclusion, Perrin was right about many things such as the androgynous men and women growing by the numbers and how itââ¬â¢s more accepted now a days. Overall, I think itââ¬â¢s the ââ¬Å"one-hundred percent manâ⬠or the ââ¬Å"one-hundred percent womanâ⬠that need to stay alive to add balance to the gender roles so that we donââ¬â¢t lose sight of our roots.Responsibility I think as students, at this time in our lives, we can all agree that at least over the past five years or so, one word that keeps being brought up is responsibility. This word has been drilled into our heads since around the age of 16. When you wanted a job, were you responsible enough? When you wanted your driverââ¬â¢s license, were you responsible enough? When you wanted to go out and par ty, were you responsible enough? I strongly believe that the more we get older, the more responsibility we take on. Responsibility is a form of trust and accountability. We all reached a point in our life where we all had to start taking accountability for our own actions. Depending on what the action was, we were either corrected or not. This would be implemented mostly by our parents. For me at least, the form of correction would be punishment. If I went out at night and came home past curfew I would get grounded. So next time if Iââ¬â¢m not home on time and know I will be late, I call ahead to confirm it with my parents so Iââ¬â¢ll get a lesser form of punishment or best case scenario, no punishment at all. This would be an example of responsibility.Today, I have countless acts of responsibility. I pay my own car payment and my own car insurance. I also pay for my cell phone bill. Also, the most important responsibility to me is taking care of my own two dogs, Duke and Lola. I think the more we get older the more responsibility we take on and handle. Itââ¬â¢s part of growing up. You canââ¬â¢t ignore it. You have to embrace it. If not, youââ¬â¢ll see how hard life can truly be.
