Abstract The rampant crime in major cities such as Baltimore Maryland, Oakland California, and Detroit, Michigan has reached an all time high and the rates are going up with celerity. With many cities such as Detroit that have strong financial problems and few law enforcement officers on the street, how is it that the crime rate can be reduced. With drug rates and gang violence flooding large urban communities, it has become increasingly hard to break the cycle of crime throughout the following generations. The media has also contributed to the glorification of crime and violent behavior. Jails and prisons are starting to become full at an alarming rate and cities are turning into war zones instead of safe places where citizens can raise a family and obtain a decent education. Crime also has a major effect on the economies in these major cities, with more funding going to penal systems then education systems. In order to reduce crime in these major cities policies must be implemented to rid crime that is within law enforcement agencies, provide b etter funding and equipment to police agencies, and involve the community more in crime prevention.
